Хоббитская фамилия неизвестного происхождения, соответствует действительному хоббитскому Tūk (см. приложение F). Таким образом, ее следует передать по звучанию, в соответствии с правилами языка перевода. Имена Туков надо сохранить в той же форме и в том же написании, в каких они даны в тексте – например Peregrin, Paladin, Adelard, Bandobras. Замечу, что "Bullroarer" {Буквально – "тот, кто ревёт как бык".} – прозвище Бандобраса на всеобщем и его следует перевести по смыслу (по возможности сохранив аллитерацию на "б"). Это прозвище упомянуто также в "Хоббите" – Bullroarer Took. Когда я писал, я полагал, что словом "bullroarer" антропологи называют устройства, издающие ревущий звук, которые в ходу у нецивилизованных народов, однако мне не удалось найти этого слова в словарях. {В словаре Webster's New International Dictionary (1927) есть статья "bullroarer": "Деревянная дощечка, привязанная к концу ремня. Такое название дано ей потому, что при вращении дощечка издает прерывистый ревущий звук. Инструмент используется в религиозных обрядах (особенно у австралийских аборигенов) и считается весьма древним. У цивилизованных народов он сохранился в качестве игрушки".} -
